GSWP-2 MMA Data Inclusion Table

This table shows which models contribute to the calculation of each variable in the multi-model analysis.  There are three categories.  "All" means all data from the model are included.  "None" means that the model does not contribute at all to that variable.  "Part" means the model partially contributes (usually as a function of space, but sometimes also as a function of time).

There can be many reasons why a model is not included in the calculation of a variable.  For the category "None", typically the model simply does not report the given variable.  However, there are cases where the model does report the variable, but there are problems which call into question the quality of the model estimate (e.g., negative values in a quantity that should be positive definite)
.  For some of the cases in the "All" category, especially for the energy and water balance terms, and the terms for evapotranspiration, some adjustments may have been made to some variables from some models where diagnosable problems were found that prevented closure of the budgets (e.g., obvious units or sign errors).  For the category "Part", typically a model is reporting missing values for the variable over part of the domain (e.g., for SnowT where there is no snow) so the model is excluded from those points so as not to affect calculation of the multi-model mean.  However, there may be other problems which are easily masked for a specific model (e.g., clearly unrealistic values confined only to permanent ice points).

Models with a force-restore temperature scheme are not allowed to contribute to the soil temperature analysis below the top layer (where the surface or diurnal layer temperature is used), because of the difficulty in interpreting the depth at which the deep or annual layer temperature is valid (it can fluctuate with soil heat capacity, which is a function of soil moisture).

Many models contribute partially to the normalized soil wetness variables  Normalization is calculated at each point for each model, based on the mean and interannual standard deviation at that point.  If a model shows no variance (most likely over desert or permanent ice points), no normalization can be performed, and the model is excluded from the analysis at that point.
